Stats Perform’s latest season review focuses on the standout performers from the shortened 2019/20 Ligue 1 campaign.

These reviews apply advanced metrics to deliver key performance insights, at both the team and player level. The advanced metrics used in the report are derived from event data and include Expected Goals (xG), Expected Assists (xA), Expected Goals on Target (xGOT) and Sequences and Possessions.
Key findings highlighted in the review include:
– From open play, PSG exceeded the xG output of the next highest team, Monaco, by over 23 (59.5 vs 36.1), reinforcing their dominance over the competition.
– Reims’ sixth place finish was underpinned by a resolute defence. Ranking in the league’s bottom three for attacking xG, David Guion’s side conceded the fewest open play goals (13), the lowest number of shots (177) and recorded the lowest xG conceded (14.4).
– Three of Ligue 1’s top four also ranked in the top three for PPDA, reinforcing the leading team’s approach to pressing. PSG forced more high turnovers than any other team (160), whilst no team scored more goals from high turnovers than Marseille (5).
– The quality of Moussa Dembele’s finishing is reflected by the Lyon striker exceeding his xG per 90 (0.47) in both xGOT (0.54) and goals scored (0.66).
– The threat posed by Nantes’ wide players is reinforced by the fact that Moses Simon and Abdoul Kader Bamba both appear in the league’s top 10 for xA per 90.
