Fan attendance in sport – week #014 overview

22-28TH MARCH

This week the BBC examined why empty grounds have destroyed home advantage. In their report (1st April 2021), they examine the impact of no fans on the Premier League:

  • For the first time, there have been more away wins (114) in the Premier League during the 2020/21 season than home wins (108)
  • 50% of Premier League teams are doing no better at home than away
  • Teams with a better away record than home has risen from 6% average over the past four seasons to 35% in 2020/21
  • The average of home wins over the past 8 seasons = 46%. In 2020/21 this has dropped to 37%

This data is why we’ve been tracking fan attendance in sport. Its impact on odds compilers, traders and sports betting professionals is too great to ignore given its impact on pricing.

Fan attendance in sport – week #007 overview

01 – 07th February

Arsene Wenger comments on the impact one major club has seen occur to their point-per game achievements at home since fans have been unable to attend matches en-masse. He also touches on the wider influences fans have on job security for managers and how their lack of attendance has in many cases perhaps bought managers more time in their roles.

Just last week, in a blow for normalcy for professional sport teams in the State of New York, Governor Andrew Cuomo has implemented a limit of 10 per cent attendance at venues.

Fan attendance in sport – week #004 overview

Home win percentage % in the Bundesliga was at its lowest level in the history of the competition with home sides having won 49 out of 144 games (34%) as of the 18th January. The second lowest home win percentage was the 2019/20 season which is when fan attendances began to be impacted due to COVID-19.

The Bundesliga announced that they were unlikely to allow fans to return to stadiums during the 2020/21 season. With other competitions likely to remain cautious in allowing fans back into venues, what steps can your trading teams be taking to manage your models in light of influences on home advantage that we are seeing across sports competitions?

Fan attendance in sport – week #003 overview

New research by NFL Football Operations examines how betting markets have changed their perception of home advantage in 2020?

The report found that home field advantage had been slowly decreasing each season since 2006. However, 2020 has seen the biggest season-to-season drop over that time, dropping more than a full point from 2019. And the 1.30 point spread on average means home-field advantage is now worth less than half of what it was in 2006 (3.30 points).

Should you be considering alterations to your betting markets models where fans are not in attendance in light of this analysis?
